Development of the Cessna 340 began in 1969, with deliveries commencing in 1971. Whilst it borrowed the wing design of the Cessna 414 and the undercarriage of the 310, it introduced an all-new pressurised fuselage which, at the time of its release, made it the only pressurised 6-seat twin from a major manufacturer apart from the Beechcraft Duke.
